The most luscious American voice in popular music. No one, and I mean no one approaches her. Sinatra said as much as did others. Just listen to “Ella In Rome: The Birthday Concert” and you’ll get the sheer brillance of Ella Fitzgerald. “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love” and “Stompin’ at the Savoy” are breathtaking.Take a listen to samples from that concert.
I actually had the exceptionally good fortune to see her live one time. She was already getting on in years and had to sit for part of the concert, but she was still AWESOME.

If you haven’t, I highly recommend listening to “Ella In Rome: The Birthday Concert” to hear her at the height of her powers. It’s absolutely devastating.
Listen to “Theme de Yoyo” first. It’s just #dope. Then click on the “Rescue Me” link below. Fontella Bass just kills it with AEOC and The Funk Brothers.
Charlie Parker under wraps…can’t believe I almost forgot my life-sized “Bird” cutout…there’s a brilliant story behind this & the infamous white plastic saxophone that I’ll write about someday… #jazz #bebop #jazz #MasseyHall #escapefromny (Taken with instagram)
I’ve been having a lot of emotions about Dave Brubeck’s passing. First the awww sadness feeling with a life passing. That feeling is stronger for me now that I’m older. Lumps in throats and tears come easier.
Then mixed in is the sincere thankfulness for his art. If you’re ever lucky enough to meet an artist who has brought joy and entertainment to you, take a moment from gushing and sincerely thank them for their art. Artists don’t hear that enough.
Then the realization of how much his music touched parts of my life…the cliche’d soundtrack of my life…lazy mornings/afternoons reading and drinking coffee and having him (“Brandenburg Gate”) playing on the blaster or computer. The excitement as a kid the first time I heard the opening beats (bass drum, snare, cymbal) of “Take Five”:
Boom ba daamp daamp baBoom ba daamp daamp…
Two beats into it, the FIRST time you hear it, you KNOW something amazing is coming!
Anyway, today, one day after his passing, it’s Dave’s 92nd birthday and I simply and sincerely say, “Thank You (Dziekuje)” sir and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Today’s music all day is:
