My favorite alt version is still Johnny Cash’s version. As devastating as the original but with way more nuance. I still get a lump in my throat every time I hear it. Watching the video is even more moving given the “House of Cash” setting, the retrospective clips of Johnny’s life, and the presence of June Carter Cash who passed shortly after the video was shot. Johnny followed her a few months later.

During the Dissonance tour in 1995, when Nine Inch Nails opened for David Bowie, Bowie sang “Hurt” in a duet with Reznor, backed by an original melody and beat. This served as the conclusion to the dual act that began each Bowie set.
