Dear Diary 013: Post-Cyclocross Depression

The cyclocross high is wearing off and the hangover is heavy. In January I’ll go to California and get 5 more races in, but I might as well be a junkie at a methadone…
This is such a well written description of what deep Winter brings to all cyclists. Like a lot of cyclists, I forge through on the long, slow winter rides hoping for an ocasional, sunny 40 degree day.
At the precipice of deep Winter with it’s extra prep time for multiple layers and embrocation for 20-30 F degree riding, no racing to follow, a seemingly slowed metabolism, often riding in the dark, crap road conditions, etc., I miss Spring, Summer, and Fall.

I don’t know whether you’ve seen the TV images of men, with all the rain, wind, huge puddles, mud and trash on the road. So we rode too. Women are not spared, there is nobody with an umbrella driving next to us to ensure that we don’t get a dirty little face. We do not get blanket around us to protect us from the cold.

I had some time to think. My main thought was: Why am I doing this? And once back there I thought things like: It’s horrible, with all that mud in my eyes, ears and mouth. It is cold and wet. Also, I thought: I really need to pee. Shall I just do it? Then I’d get some heat, at least for a moment. And, I’m hungry, but my fingers are numb from the cold, so I can not find my bars. And then I found one, but couldn’t open it.

I do not feel like waiting for the alarm. My muscles are stiff and sore, but my body is restless. I wave my stiff legs over the edge of the bed and go and brush my teeth. I see red eyes in the mirror. A weary head. Today we torture ourselves again during the exploration of the Tour of Flanders route. Cycling is still great. I hate it. I want no more pain. It’s delicious. On to the next course!

Red Hook Criterium No. 4 - Brooklyn 2011
The Red Hook Criterium is an unsanctioned bicycle race through a desolate post-industrial area of Brooklyn. Track bikes are mandatory and the field consists of elite level roadies, bike messengers, and urban cyclists. The race distance is 20 laps around a .75 mile circuit which features several hairpin turns, a technical chicane, a cobblestone stretch, and a sprint finish. The Red Hook Criterium has developed a new and unique style of cycling event which combines the underground art of street racing with the intensity of high level competition in a fun spectator friendly atmosphere.
This year’s Red Hook Criterium is March 26, 2011 at 11pm. Racers can register starting noon on March 7. Check out cool pixs from last year. Can’t wait.
