The Barton Creek Greenbelt is Austin’s crown jewel. Ten minutes from downtown and you’re in 29er heaven at the Zilker Park trailhead. Or drop into the limestone canyon carved by Barton Creek from one of the numerous trailheads along the 7-mile plus main trail. Then get ready for gnarly single track action through woods, caliche rock, short cliffs, creek beds, and side trail climbs all the way to Westlake Hills. And when it rains, the gnar factor gets ratched up with “da mud.” At the western end of the main trail, the “Hill of Life,” a caliche rock, terraced wall, takes you out of the Greenbelt. It’s straight up and down and not for MTB noobs. When you’re back at Zilker, lock up your bike, and jump into the Barton Springs Pool and it’s cool off bliss…even when it’s triple digits outside.
